Herzog & de Meuron - Central signal box, Basel 1999. Located in close proximity to the signal box auf dem wolf, this central tower is located adjacent to a major roadway, and as such:
“…it relates as much to the city as it does to the railroad yards. Thanks to its object-like character, the building is spatially linked to the other solitary buildings that characterize this disparate urban area.”
The central box sits on a trapezoidal floor plan, which gradually transforms to a square at the top. The resulting mass creates a dramatically different effect as one circles around it; from some views monolithic and massive, from others slender and precarious.
